Would you like to understand more about how Danish society works and feel more confident navigating everyday life in Denmark?
This course is an introduction to Danish society, culture and everyday life, taught in English. We explore some of the systems, customs and practical situations that are part of everyday life in Denmark.
The course is designed as an open, educational course for adults who are interested in learning more about Denmark. You do not need to speak Danish to participate.
We will explore topics such as:
• banks and everyday banking in Denmark
• insurance and common types of insurance
• housing and working with estate agents
• how to buy tickets for buses, trains and ferries
• pharmacies and the general rules around medicines
• waste sorting and handling of household waste
• how to find and contact tradespeople such as electricians and carpenters
• communication from Danish schools
• school holidays and the Danish school year
• Danish customs and everyday culture
• how different parts of Danish society work together
The course is not simply about learning what to do. We will also look at why things work the way they do in Denmark.
For example, why are there certain ways of communicating with schools? How does public transport work? What should you know when dealing with a bank or insurance company? And what can you expect when contacting a Danish tradesperson?
The teaching is dialogue-based and combines short presentations, practical examples, discussion and questions. There will be plenty of opportunity to compare Danish customs and systems with those from other countries.
The course is particularly relevant for people who are new to Denmark, but it is open to all adults who are interested in Danish society and culture.
The course is taught in English and is co-instructed by Martin Taylor (Australia).
The aim is to give you knowledge and a better understanding of Danish society, while creating a friendly space for questions, discussion and cultural exchange.
